use?

There are dozens of free website speed testing tools available, but they don’t all measure performance in the same way and the scores they give you can be very different.

When carrying out my Website SEO Audits, there are four free tools I regularly use to test page speed and investigate Core Web Vitals:

Google PageSpeed Insights, GTmetrix, Pingdom and WebPageTest.

I don’t use each one for the same reason. Some are better for understanding Google’s Core Web Vitals data, while others are more useful for investigating individual requests, waterfalls, loading behaviour or performance from different locations.

In this guide I’ll explain which free website speed checker I use for what, what the results actually tell you, and why the tools can give you different scores for exactly the same page.

Why does website speed matter?

Website speed matters because it directly affects how people experience your website.

A slow page can leave visitors waiting for the main content to appear, trying to interact with something that isn’t ready yet, or dealing with elements moving around as the page loads.

That’s why I don’t look at website speed as simply “how many seconds did the page take to load?” There are different parts of the loading experience worth measuring, which is where Core Web Vitals become particularly useful.

The important thing for this article is that different website speed testing tools measure these things in different ways. Some give you a simulated performance test, some can show real-user data, and some are much better for diagnosing why a page is slow.

That’s also why I wouldn’t judge a website from a single speed-test score.

Does site speed affect your SEO performance?

Yes, website performance can affect SEO, but it’s important to understand what Google is actually measuring.

Your PageSpeed Insights performance score is not itself a Google ranking score.

Getting a page from 70 to 100 doesn’t automatically mean it’s going to rank higher.

Google uses Core Web Vitals as part of its page experience signals, looking at real-world measures of loading performance, responsiveness and visual stability.

The current Core Web Vitals are:

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how quickly the main content of the page becomes visible.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how responsive the page is when someone interacts with it.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how visually stable the page is while it loads.

Site performance can also matter beyond rankings. A slow or unstable page can make it harder for visitors to use the site, complete an enquiry or purchase, or simply get to the information they came for.

So when I’m investigating website performance, I’m not trying to achieve a perfect score for the sake of it. I’m looking for performance problems that affect real users and understanding what the testing data tells me about the page.

How do you check the speed of a website?

The easiest way to check the speed of a website is to enter the page URL into a free website speed testing tool such as Google PageSpeed Insights, GTmetrix, Pingdom or WebPageTest.

But I wouldn’t rely on one tool or one test result.

Website speed can vary depending on the device being simulated, connection speed, test location, server response, caching and what was happening on the website at the exact time the test was run.

More importantly, the tools don’t all tell you the same thing.

Google PageSpeed Insights is particularly useful when I want to see Google’s performance data and whether real-user Core Web Vitals data is available.

GTmetrix and WebPageTest give me much more detail when I want to investigate why a page is loading slowly.

While Pingdom is useful for quickly testing load performance from different locations.

That’s why, when I’m carrying out an audit, I’ll usually test important pages with more than one tool rather than treating a single score as definitive.

What is a Core Web Vitals test?

A Core Web Vitals test helps you understand how a page performs against Google’s three Core Web Vitals metrics:

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

Interaction to Next Paint (INP)

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

However, there’s an important distinction between lab data and field data.

Lab data is produced by testing a page under controlled or simulated conditions. It’s extremely useful for diagnosing performance problems because you can run tests repeatedly, make changes and compare the results.

Field data comes from real users visiting the website under real-world conditions. Google can surface this through the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX), including within PageSpeed Insights when sufficient data is available.

This distinction matters because a page can perform well in a simulated speed test but still have poor Core Web Vitals for real users, or the other way around.

So if you’re specifically checking Core Web Vitals, don’t just look at the overall performance score. Check whether you’re looking at lab or real-user data, which metrics are failing, and what the tool is actually measuring.

Are website speed tests accurate?

Website speed tests are useful, but I wouldn’t treat the result from a single test as an absolute measurement of how fast a website is.

Run the same page through several tools, or even run the same test several times, and you can get different results.

That’s because the result can be affected by things such as the test location, simulated device, connection speed, browser, server response, caching and whether the test is using lab or real-user data.

The tools also measure and present performance differently. A score of 90 in one tool isn’t necessarily comparable with a score of 90 in another.

This doesn’t make website speed tests inaccurate or useless. It means you need to understand what each tool is measuring and use the results in context.

Personally, when carrying out my SEO audits, I take benchmarks from multiple tools and repeat important tests. This gives me a much better picture of performance than relying on one score from one test.

I’m also more interested in patterns and specific problems than chasing a perfect score. If several tests consistently show a slow server response, a large image delaying LCP or excessive JavaScript affecting responsiveness, that’s much more useful than knowing one test gave the page an 82 and another gave it an 87.

What are the best free website speed test tools?

The four free website speed testing tools I use regularly are Google PageSpeed Insights, GTmetrix, Pingdom and WebPageTest.

I don’t think there’s one tool that’s “best” for every situation. I use them for different reasons:

Google PageSpeed Insights
best starting point for checking Google’s performance metrics and available real-user Core Web Vitals data.

GTmetrix
my personal favourite for investigating performance problems in an accessible, easy-to-understand report.

Pingdom
useful for quick page-speed tests from different geographic locations.

WebPageTest
particularly useful when I want more control over the test conditions and deeper technical performance data

If you only want a quick check, I’d start with PageSpeed Insights. If you’re trying to work out why a page is slow, I’d use that alongside GTmetrix or WebPageTest.

Google PageSpeed Insights

Google PageSpeed Insights is usually the first tool I’d recommend if you want to run a free website speed test, particularly if you’re interested in Core Web Vitals and how Google measures page performance.

Enter a URL and PageSpeed Insights will analyse the page on both mobile and desktop, giving you performance data and highlighting potential opportunities for improvement.

One of the most useful things about PageSpeed Insights is that it can show you two different types of data.

Field data comes from real Chrome users via the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX), where sufficient data is available. This is particularly important when you’re investigating Core Web Vitals because it tells you how the page has actually performed for real users rather than just how it performed during one test.

Lab data is generated from a simulated Lighthouse test. This is useful for diagnosing why a page may be performing poorly and identifying things such as render-blocking resources, large images, JavaScript execution and other potential performance bottlenecks.

The Lighthouse section also gives the page a performance score out of 100, but I wouldn’t make the mistake of treating that number as the objective.

A score of 100 isn’t required for SEO, and the score itself isn’t the same thing as passing Core Web Vitals. I use it as a diagnostic benchmark rather than something to chase for its own sake.

When do I use PageSpeed Insights? Pretty much every time I’m investigating website performance. It’s my starting point for understanding Google’s view of the page, checking available Core Web Vitals field data and identifying where further investigation may be needed.

Click here to view the test results on Google PageSpeed Insights for daveashworth.co

GTmetrix

My personal favourite is GTmetrix.

I find GTmetrix particularly useful when a speed test has identified a problem and I want to understand what is actually happening while the page loads.

The report gives you performance metrics alongside a detailed waterfall chart, showing the individual requests made by the page and how long each one takes. This can make it much easier to spot slow resources, large files, third-party scripts or requests that are holding up other parts of the page.

I also like the way GTmetrix presents the information. You can dig into plenty of technical detail, but you don’t necessarily need to be a developer to understand where the main problems are.

When do I use GTmetrix? Usually when I want to go beyond a headline performance score and investigate the cause of a problem. If PageSpeed Insights tells me a page is slow, GTmetrix is often one of the next places I’ll look.

The free version is more than enough for many one-off performance investigations. GTmetrix also offers paid features for things such as monitoring, scheduled tests and additional testing options, but you don’t need those simply to check the speed of a page.

Click here to view the test results on GTMetrix for daveashworth.co

Pingdom

Pingdom Website Speed Test is another quick and easy way to test the loading performance of a page.

One reason I still use Pingdom is the ability to run tests from different geographic locations. Where your website is hosted and where your visitors are located can affect loading performance, so testing from more than one location can help identify differences that aren’t obvious from a single test.

The results give you an overall performance summary alongside information about page size, load time and the individual requests made while loading the page.

Like GTmetrix, you can inspect those requests to identify particularly large or slow resources, although I personally find GTmetrix more useful when I’m doing a deeper investigation.

When do I use Pingdom? Mainly when I want a quick additional benchmark or want to compare how a page performs when tested from different locations.

Pingdom also offers paid monitoring products, but for the purpose of this article it’s the free website speed test that I’m interested in.

Click here to view the test results on Pingdom for daveashworth.co

WebPageTest

WebPageTest is probably the most advanced of the four free website speed testing tools I regularly use.

It gives you much more control over how and where a page is tested, including the test location, browser, device and connection conditions. You can also run multiple tests, which is useful because website performance can fluctuate from one run to another.

The results provide a detailed breakdown of the loading process, including a waterfall view of individual requests. This makes WebPageTest particularly useful when I want to dig deeper into the loading sequence and understand exactly what’s happening as the page renders.

There’s a lot of information available, which also means WebPageTest can feel more technical than something like PageSpeed Insights or Pingdom if you’re new to performance testing.

When do I use WebPageTest? Usually when I need more control over the testing conditions or want to investigate a performance problem in greater detail. It’s particularly useful when I want to reproduce how a page might perform for a specific type of user, device or connection rather than relying on one standard test configuration.

If you’re simply looking for a quick answer to “is my website slow?”, I’d probably start with PageSpeed Insights. If you’re trying to understand exactly why it’s slow, WebPageTest can give you much more to work with.

Click here to view the test results on WebPageTest for daveashworth.co

Other Site Performance Tools

To be perfectly honest, the reason I’ve picked those four as the best free website speed testing tools is simple: they’re the ones I actually use and have been using for years.

There are plenty of other free website performance tools available, but I don’t use them regularly enough to recommend them based on my own experience.

Some alternatives you may want to try include:

Uptrends

DebugBear

Dotcom-Tools

KeyCDN Tools

Sitechecker

That’s not to say these tools aren’t any good, simply that to be perfectly honest, the reason I’ve picked those four as the best free website speed testing tools is simple: they’re the ones I actually use and have been using for years.

There are plenty of other free website performance tools available, but I don’t use them regularly enough to recommend them based on my own experience.

Which website speed test should you use?

here isn’t one website speed testing tool I’d recommend for every situation.

Google PageSpeed Insights is where I’d start if you want a quick free test and particularly if you’re interested in Google’s Core Web Vitals data.

GTmetrix is my personal favourite when I want to investigate what’s causing a performance problem, while Pingdom is useful for quick comparisons from different locations. If I need more control over the test conditions or want to dig much deeper into how a page loads, I’ll use WebPageTest.

In practice, I rarely rely on just one.

When I’m investigating a performance problem, I’ll usually test the same page with several tools, compare the results and look for consistent issues rather than obsessing over whether one tool gives the page a slightly higher score than another.

And remember, a poor speed-test score doesn’t automatically explain a drop in organic visibility. If you’re seeing performance issues alongside crawling, indexing or ranking problems, they may be part of a wider SEO issue rather than site speed alone.

If you need help understanding what’s slowing your site down or resolving the issues these tools identify, take a look at my website performance consultancy or SEO audit services.

{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity":
[
  {
   "@type": "Question",
"name": "Why does website speed matter?",
   "acceptedAnswer":
   {
    "@type": "Answer",
"text": "Website speed is a crucial factor in the success of any online business or website.
