{"id":1157,"date":"2023-03-17T18:40:33","date_gmt":"2023-03-17T18:40:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/organicdigital.co\/blog\/?p=1157"},"modified":"2024-06-10T15:02:10","modified_gmt":"2024-06-10T14:02:10","slug":"how-to-set-up-custom-traffic-alerts-in-google-analytics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/daveashworth.co\/blog\/how-to-set-up-custom-traffic-alerts-in-google-analytics\/","title":{"rendered":"How To: Set Up Custom Website Traffic Alerts in Google Analytics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In all my time as a <a href=\"https:\/\/daveashworth.co\/skills\/analytics-and-ad-tracking-consultant\/google-analytics-4\/\">Google Analytics consultant<\/a>, I&#8217;ve found one of the most underrated and underused features in Google Analytics is the custom alert.\u00a0 Over the last 10 years or so I reckon I\u2019ve carried out over 500 <a href=\"https:\/\/daveashworth.co\/services-and-consultancy\/website-seo-audits-consultant\/\">website audits<\/a>, a part of which looks at the site&#8217;s current Google Analytics configuration. And in that time I can honestly say that not one of those websites had already implemented custom alerts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crazy right? They are triggered when certain metrics, dimensions, or conditions that you specify are met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_would_you_set_up_custom_alerts\"><\/span><strong>Why would you set up custom alerts?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>They can help you quickly identify traffic issues and so you can be react quickly and resolve any issues that are affecting your data and reports. You can also set a specific value, a percentage change, or a comparison with another metric.&nbsp; In some cases, you can compare over a certain time period.&nbsp;&nbsp; The example below would be set up if you wanted to be alerted when 0 sessions are tracked in a day.&nbsp;&nbsp; in GA4, they are &#8220;Custom Insights&#8221;, but for the early adopters amongst us, the steps are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In your GA4 account navigate to the &#8220;Reports Snapshot&#8221; On the other hand, they will also tell you if you see an unexpected spike.  Basically, Google decides if a drop or rise in the metric is deemed a data anomaly and would alert you.<br><br>The alerts I like to set up are for organic drops in traffic, so in the case of these a week on week alert works better.   This is because on many websites, traffic will invariably drop off over a weekend, so comparing to the same day last week works better.
