But in practice, you still see SERPs where keyword-led URLs appear to have an edge &#8211; particularly when they align closely with how users search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So rather than rely on theory, I href=\"https:\/\/daveashworth.co\/blog\/why-ive-rebranded-as-dave-ashworth\/\">I rebranded and launched my new site<\/a>, the focus for the structure and content was on consultancy-led services and skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The original URL structure looked like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\/services\/<br>\/services\/website-migrations\/<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\/skills\/<br>\/skills\/google-tag-manager\/<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of November, I updated all service and skills URLs (27 pages in total) to include \u201cconsultant\u201d or \u201cconsultancy\u201d terms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\/services-and-consultancy\/<br>\/services-and-consultancy\/website-migrations-consultant\/<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\/skills\/google-tag-manager-consultant\/<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Changed_and_What_Didnt\"><\/span>What Changed (and What Didn\u2019t)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To keep this as clean as possible:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All updated URLs were redirected using 301s<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Internal links were updated accordingly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Titles, headings, content, and schema were left unchanged<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No additional optimisation work was carried out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This was purely a URL structure update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Impact\"><\/span>The Impact<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Using Google Search Console, I compared 1st December \u2013 31st March against the same period previously, filtering for queries containing \u201cconsult\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"865\" height=\"418\" sizes=\"(max-width: 865px) 100vw, 865px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The result:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A modest increase in clicks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A significant increase in impressions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A clear improvement in average position<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest gains were seen on consultancy-related queries, where the updated URLs more closely matched search intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Impression_Increases\"><\/span>Impression Increases<span class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_This_Suggests\"><\/span>What This Suggests<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t a controlled experiment, and rankings are never influenced by a single factor in isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, with no other changes made to these pages, the data strongly suggests that adding relevant keywords to URLs can help reinforce topical relevance &#8211; particularly when those terms reflect how users are searching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Final_Take\"><\/span>Final Take<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>URLs are just one part of how your pages are understood &#8211; alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/daveashworth.co\/blog\/seo-why-you-dont-need-to-include-brand-name-in-title-tags-anymore\/\">titles<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/daveashworth.co\/blog\/how-to-stop-google-from-re-writing-your-meta-descriptions\/\">meta descriptions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/daveashworth.co\/blog\/case-study-the-importance-of-schema-mark-up\/\">structured data<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, do keywords in URLs impact rankings?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on this test, they appear to play a supporting role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not something to over-optimise or keyword-stuff, but when used naturally and aligned with intent, they can contribute to improved visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short &#8211; keep URLs clean, descriptive, and relevant. &nbsp;And feel free to chuck in some
